Damian
Damian Lidgard was born in England in 1969. His interest in nature photography began in 1990 after he graduated from university with a Bachelor's degree in Zoology. Damian believes that a good photograph comes from the eye and not the camera, so he has used his zoological training and experience to teach himself to quietly observe and photograph nature and people. In 2006, Damian developed his observational skills through studying Miksang contemplative photography, a meditative art form that has transformed his view of the photographic world. Damian's approach to photography is one of simplicity. "I wait for perceptions to arrive rather than attempt to create them. I photograph with minimal equipment and follow no rules. I free my mind of distracting and judgemental thoughts such as 'this would look good' and 'I don't like that'. With everything simple and free, I can keep my mind empty and my eye open to see perceptions as they arise." Inspiration for his photography comes from the elements of colour and light, texture and form, space and time. His images often have a strong sense of 'kairos'; a brief moment in time when something special happens. Damian is now based in Halifax, NS Canada where he combines his work as a zoologist and photographer. His photography work on Sable Island has been published in the French magazines Cheval and Thalassa and is showcased in several businesses in Nova Scotia.
